What’s a Victron ESS?

A Victron Energy Storage System (ESS) is a specific type of hybrid power system that integrates a power grid connection (Eskom) with a Victron Inverter, a solar charge controller (or grid-tied inverter) and battery system. The system is then managed by a monitoring & control device, like the Victron Colour Control GX. The system stores solar energy into your battery during the day, for use later on when the sun stops shining.

This proven solution is a market leader providing an optimal combination of power security and solar savings.

Inverter

This is the heart of your system. An Inverter performs the conversion of battery DC power into traditional AC power. The built-in charger allows you to charge the battery after it has been depleted. The size of the inverter needs to be determined by the amount of load (electrical appliances) that you would like to support during a power failure.

Victron MultiPlus II Inverter

Available in 3kVA and 5kVA sizes.

The MultiPlus, as the name suggests, is a combined inverter and charger in one elegant package. Its many features include a true sine wave inverter, adaptive charging, hybrid PowerAssist technology, plus multiple system integration features. The MultiPlus II has built-in anti-islanding and an increasingly long list of country approvals. A 3-Phase Inverter system can be created by using 3 x MultiPlus Inverters.

Victron Quattro Inverter

Available in 5kVA / 8kVA / 10kVA & 15kVA

 Similar to the MultiPlus, the Quattro is also a combined inverter and charger. Additionally it can accept two AC inputs and automatically connect to the active source (Connect both Grid and a Generator). The Quattro Inverter is available in larger sizes than the MultiPlus range of Inverters and is therefore most appropriate in larger installations. A 3-Phase Inverter system can be created by using 3 x Quattro Inverters.

Battery

Energy Storage is a key component in any hybrid power system. Batteries allow energy to be stored, which can later be used by the inverter to supply loads (electrical appliances) during a power failure. Batteries can also be used to store excess solar energy, which can then be discharged at night to further reduce your electricity bill.

Solar Charge Controller

A solar charger gathers energy from your solar panels, and stores it in your batteries. This energy can be used by the inverter to supply loads (electrical appliances). This type of solar configuration is called DC-Coupled Solar.

Using the latest, fastest technology, BlueSolar maximises solar energy-harvest, driving it intelligently to achieve full charge in the shortest possible time. BlueSolar maintains battery health, extending its life.

Victron SmartSolar MPPT Charge Controller

Using the latest, fastest technology, SmartSolar maximises solar energy-harvest, driving it intelligently to achieve full charge in the shortest possible time. SmartSolar maintains battery health, extending its life. SmartSolar comes with bluetooth connectivity built-in, allowing for easy setup and monitoring of the device.

Grid-Tied Inverter

A grid-tied inverter converts solar DC power into conventional AC power. The AC power generated by the grid-tied inverter can then be used to supply loads (electrical appliances). This type of solar configuration is called AC-Coupled Solar. Grid-Tied inverters are preferred over Solar Charge Controllers in applications that involve a large number of solar panels (>5kWp) due to convenient and efficient string configurations.

Fronius Primo

With power categories ranging from 3.0 to 8.2 kW, the Fronius Primo perfectly complements the SnapINverter generation. This single-phase, transformerless device is the ideal inverter for private households. Victron-Fronius integration allows for a seamless installation of harmoniously synchronised equipment.

Fronius Symo

Fronius Eco

 

The three-phase Fronius Eco in power categories 25.0 and 27.0 kW perfectly meets all the requirements of large-scale installations. This inverter series sets new standards with its IP 66 protection class.

Victron Color Control GX

 

The Color Control GX is the communication-centre of your installation. It offers at-a-glance live information, and lets you control all products connected to it. Victron BMV

 

The BMV is a high precision battery monitor. The essential function of a battery monitor is to calculate ampere hours consumed and the state of charge of a battery. Ampere hours consumed are calculated by integrating the current flowing in or out of the battery.

Energy Meters

 

The ET112 (for single phase max. 100A) and the ET340 (for three phase max. 65A) Energy Meters are typically used in an Energy Storage System (ESS).

The functions of the Energy Meter:

1) To measure the power and energy of the whole application at the distribution box.

2) To display the data on the GX (Monitoring) Device and the VRM Portal.

3) To provide export power limitation (EPL) where necessary.
